MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 15, 2013 12:09 PM
From: Representative Carl Walker Metzgar
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Urging the Secretary of the Navy to Commission the USS Somerset in the Port of Philadelphia

In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation, beseeching the United States Navy to commission the USS Somerset in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which is one of the closet ports to Somerset County, PA and space is readily available for the commissioning of the USS Somerset.

As you may know, the ship’s name honors the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 whose actions prevented terrorist hijackers from reaching their intended target, forcing the aircraft to crash in Somerset County, PA, on September 11, 2001. It seems only appropriate and fitting that the vessel’s commissioning ceremony be held at a port that is directly associated with the State of Pennsylvania where Somerset County is located.

The U.S. Navy has successfully cleared a portion of the port in Philadelphia as a potential site, and local officials fully support our request. Therefore, I wholeheartedly and respectfully request your support in asking that the U.S. Navy hold the commissioning ceremony in Philadelphia.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution in support of this very important matter.
