Subject:	Amending the First Class Township Code to Allow Police Officers to Serve on a School Board

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation amending the First Class Township Code to allow police officers to serve on their local school board without having to resign from the police force. Currently police officers in a first class township are forbidden from holding any public office besides constable and health officer. My legislation will add school board member to the list of elected offices that police officers in a first class township may hold. The Second Class Township Code and the Borough Code do not expressly forbid a police officer from running for a seat on their local school board. In my area, several officers hold seats on their respective boards in Boroughs and Townships. This legislation will allow police officers serving in a first class township the same opportunity. I am introducing this legislation as the result of a situation that has arisen in my district where two local police officers plan to run for a position on the local school board but have discovered that they either need to resign as a police officer or not take office if they win an election for school board member.
