Subject: | Childhood Obesity Study |
In the near future I will be introducing a resolution directing the Joint State Government Commission to establish an advisory committee to study the issue of childhood obesity in the Commonwealth. Studies continue to show the increasing problem of children who are overweight or obese and the costly implications of obesity on their long-term health, education and potential for future success. The Commonwealth needs to fully discover the extent of the problem, its root causes and explore various means for addressing the problem while respecting the freedom and dignity of children and families. The YMCA of the USA and the Pennsylvania State Alliance of YMCAs have identified childhood obesity as one of the most significant health care challenges facing children in this Commonwealth and country. As Co-Chair of the YMCA Legislative Caucus, I am pleased to introduce this resolution to bring together a group of individuals dedicated to ensuring the health and well-being of children to study and analyze the problem and to propose responsible actions to combat it. This resolution will direct the Joint State Government Commission to assemble an advisory committee of professional experts and organizations, such as the YMCA, charged with the responsibility of addressing childhood obesity as a component of their mission and cause. The advisory committee and Commission will examine the issue comprehensively and produce a final report with findings of fact, recommendations and any proposed legislative remedies. Please join me in this important effort by co-sponsoring and supporting this resolution. |
