Subject: Cosponsorship of Legislation - Resolution Honoring Indira Ridgeway

Memorandum

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution honoring the many achievements of Indira Renata Ridgeway, an 11th grade student at Harrisburg High School’s SciTech Campus. It is my sincere hope you will join me in this effort.

Indira is truly an inspiration for young people in her community, being involved in numerous educational and civic programs and organizations. Her many passions include advocating against blood diamonds and human trafficking. In this capacity, Indira worked with principals at both Harrisburg High School campuses to establish a program which awarded extra-credit to students who completed online human trafficking training. With regards to blood diamonds, Indira increased awareness among her peers and the community through the completion of a National History Day project which received local, regional, and statewide attention.

Aside from Indira’s passion for these two causes, she is also an ardent supporter of educational achievement and is involved in many activities at her school. For example, Indira has been working with elementary students in her community as an American Red Cross CPR/AED certified babysitter as well as providing tutoring services. At Harrisburg’s SciTech Campus, Indira is involved in the school’s student council, is a member of the school’s cheerleading squad, and serves on the Harrisburg Rotary Youth Community Development Team. Realizing that national and international problems and crises have an impact locally, Indira helped to organize a fundraising effort to help all those affected by the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. In light of Indira’s many achievements, the United States Congress recently awarded her the Congressional Gold Medal. Indira had to volunteer over four hundred hours during a two-year period to be eligible for the award. Indira’s sister, Thais, was the first Harrisburg native to be awarded the Congressional Award Gold Medal in 2008.
