| Subject: | Resolution honoring Polish engineer and American Resolution hero, Thaddeus Kosciuszko |
| In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution to honor the life and contributions of Thaddeus Kosciuszko, Polish engineer and hero of the American Revolution. Thaddeus Kosciuszko studied engineering prior to moving to America in 1776, and was later commissioned as Colonel of Engineers by the Continental Congress. After being commissioned, Kosciuszko began his service of fortifying battle sites, many of which became turning points in America's fight for independence against the British. Among Kosciuszko’s most famous fortifications was along the Hudson River in the defense of Saratoga, and West Point, New York, which was unable to be penetrated by the British Army. Thomas Jefferson wrote of Kosciuszko and declared him as “pure a son of liberty as I have ever known.” Prior to leaving America in 1798 to return to Poland, Kosciuszko requested in his will that the money from his estate be used to buy freedom for slaves in order to help educate them and provide them with land and liberty. Kosciuszko, who deeply admired the Declaration of Independence, died at the age of 72 on October 15, 1817.
