Subject: | Condolence Resolution Honoring Dr. Happy Fernandez |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a condolence resolution honoring the life and career of Dr. Happy Fernandez, a prominent leader, educator, and community activist in Philadelphia. One of Dr. Fernandez’s many accomplishments was her groundbreaking political involvement. After an impressive campaign, she served two terms on City Council as a councilwoman at-large. In 1999, she became the first woman to seek her party’s nomination for Mayor of Philadelphia. Dr. Fernandez also left her mark on education at all levels. She served as the President of Moore College of Art & Design for 13 years and taught in the School of Social Administration at Temple University for 18 years. She demonstrated her fierce support for public education by founding and leading the Parents Union for Public Schools and the Children’s Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. Sadly, on January 19, 2013, Dr. Fernandez passed away leaving behind her husband, three sons, and eight grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered as a determined advocate and an exceptional role model. Please join me in honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Happy Fernandez. Thank you for your consideration. |
