Subject: | Prevention of Voter Intimidation and Suppression Act |
MEMORANDUM TO: Members of the House of Representatives FROM: Representative Matt Bradford DATE: January 11, 2013 SUBJECT: Co-Sponsorship Request – Voter Intimidation & Suppression Prevention In the near future, I plan to reintroduce House Bill 1193 of the 2011-2012 Legislative Session, which will prohibit deceptive practices and voter intimidation in elections and provide the Attorney General with powers and duties to enforce such laws. In the last several election cycles, voter intimidation and deceptive practices have been perpetrated in order to suppress voter turnout and attempt to impact election results. Deceptive practices, which are intentional dissemination of false or misleading information about the voting process with the intent to prevent an eligible voter from casting a ballot, are frequently aimed at minority communities. My legislation attempts to cease these deceptive practices by making the dissemination of false or misleading information with the intent to prevent a voter from casting a ballot illegal. During the 2011-2012 Legislative Session, the following members were cosponsors of House Bill 1193: Representatives Briggs, Caltagirone, DePasquale, Fabrizio, Frankel, Gibbons, Goodman, Josephs, Mann, Moul, Murphy, Murt, Payton, Quinn, Readshaw, Santarsiero, K. Smith, Staback, Swanger, Wagner, and Waters. |
