Subject: Legislation Deer Processor’s Tax Credit

Each year, hunters make the conscious decision to donate thousands of pounds of venison to accepting public charities which specialize in feeding the hungry. In order to donate this venison, a hunter is responsible for taking the deer remains to a processor, which specializes in butchering the deer and making various cuts of venison. However, the cost a donating hunter incurs as a result of the processing can prove to be high and may serve to deter future donations.

With this cost in mind, in the near future, I will be re-introducing previous House Bill 885, 2011-2012, regarding the Deer Processor’s Tax Credit, with the intent of providing an incentive to encourage additional venison donations. My legislation would provide a tax credit to processors who perform their service without charge to hunters that wish to donate the final product to an organization which specializes in feeding the hungry. For each deer processed, free of charge, a processor may receive a $50 tax credit. In total, a processor may receive no more than $2,500 in tax credit during a given tax year.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.
