MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 15, 2013 02:15 PM
From: Representative Rob W. Kauffman
To: All House members
Subject: Kennel License Fees (Formerly HB 464)

In the near future, I will introduce legislation to amend the Dog Law to clarify the amount of money that needs to accompany a kennel license application in certain circumstances. The kennel license classes are based on the number of dogs handled by the kennel on an annual basis. If a kennel realizes that its numbers will increase within the license year, the current law permits them to apply for the next highest level of kennel class license.

However, there is no provision for what amount of fees should accompany the upgraded application. For instance, if a person applies for a Kennel Class III license, the total number of dogs handled falls between 101 and 150 dogs and the license fee is $300. If the kennel realizes that it will exceed 150 dogs in the calendar year and applies for a Kennel Class IV license (151-250 dogs), the license fee is $400.

My legislation will make it clear that the upgraded application during the calendar year needs only to be accompanied by a fee in the amount of difference between the amount already paid, and the fee for the new license class (in the example above, $100), rather than submitting the full amount for the new license class.
