Subject: | Definition of Fire Department Vehicle (Former HB 553) |
I plan to reintroduce legislation that will allow a fire department vehicle owned by a fire relief association to receive an “emergency vehicle” plate. Specifically, my proposal will amend the definition section of the vehicle code by expanding the definition of “fire department vehicle,” to include a vehicle owned or leased by a fire relief association. It has come to my attention that PennDOT will not issue an emergency vehicle tag to a tanker truck or other fire apparatus that is owned by a fire relief association. PennDOT has stated that to qualify for emergency vehicle plate the vehicle must be in the fire company’s name. As you may know, many fire companies rely on their relief associations for funding and other firefighting necessities. Because of this, our volunteer fire companies are forced to become the lessee of their own emergency vehicles, which is an option given to our fire companies by PennDOT.
