MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 11, 2013 02:56 PM
From: Representative Jim Cox
To: All House members
Subject: Temporary Disability Parking Placards

I invite you to join me in co-sponsoring legislation which would give certain medical professionals the ability to issue temporary disability placards for their patients.

Currently, when a patient suffers an injury, is recovering from surgery or some other form of disability which is deemed to be of a temporary nature, they complete a MV-145A, which their physician authorizes. This is then submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for processing. The current processing time often takes up to six weeks, which defeats the intended purpose of a temporary placard.

If we trust our medical professionals to dispense potentially addictive medications such as Morphine and Oxycodone, it only makes sense that we allow them to eliminate a lengthy step in the process of meeting this temporary need of their patients. Paperwork would still be submitted to the Department for proper recording of the issued placards.

Co-sponsors of prior versions of this legislation include:

Cohen, Day, Farry, Gillen, Gillespie, Goodman, Harhart, Knowles, Moul, Murt, Rapp, Samuelson, Vereb, White, and Youngblood.
