Subject: | Statewide Election of Insurance Commissioner (former HB 941) |
In the near future, I plan to re-introduce legislation from last session amending the Constitution of Pennsylvania to require the Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner to be elected rather than appointed. Currently, the state constitution authorizes the governor to appoint the insurance commissioner. However, I strongly believe that because of the important responsibilities and duties given to the insurance commissioner, the citizens of Pennsylvania should ultimately choose who is placed in this position. This bill will require the insurance commissioner to be elected on the day the general election is held for the auditor general and state treasurer and will establish a four-year term. The bill further states that an insurance commissioner cannot be employed directly or indirectly by an insurance company within four years after serving as insurance commissioner.
