Subject: | Co-sponsorship: Designating Harley-Davidson as Official State Motorcycle (Former HB 1340) |
In the near future, I plan to re-introduce legislation (former HB 1340) that designates the Harley-Davidson, a true-blue American iron horse, manufactured in Pennsylvania by American workers using American steel- as the official State Motorcycle of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The first Harley-Davidson factory was erected in 1906 by founders William S. Harley, Arthur Davidson, Walter Davidson, and William A. Davidson on Chestnut Street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where it remains as Harley-Davidson’s corporate headquarters today. During World Wars I and II, more than half of all Harley-Davidson motorcycles produced were sold for use by the U.S. military, as motorcycles were in high demand for combat service in the war effort. It is estimated that the Army utilized approximately 60,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles during both wars. The largest Harley-Davidson manufacturing facility is located in our Commonwealth in the city of York, Pennsylvania. The facility opened in 1973 and performs a myriad of manufacturing operations from machining, polishing, and chrome plating to forming, welding and painting. Each year, hundreds of Harley-Davidson enthusiasts trek to York to witness firsthand the living legacy of Harley-Davidson USA, tour the facility, and visit the Harley-Davidson gift shop. I ask that you please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. Previous Co-Sponsors for HB 1340: Barrar, Boback, Boyd, V. Brown, Caltagirone, Conklin, D.
