MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Condolence Resolution Honoring Wendell W. Young, III

In the near future, I plan to introduce a condolence resolution honoring the life and career of President Emeritus of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1776 and Philadelphia labor relations leader Wendell W. Young, III.

Born and raised in the city of Philadelphia, Wendell W. Young, III has exhibited enormous leadership and energy in support of the members of UFCW Local 1776, where he served as president from 1962 (when it was known as the Retail Clerks Local 1357) until 2005. As the engineer of an unprecedented labor agreement, Mr. Young orchestrated the purchase of ACME Markets becoming personally responsible for saving the jobs of thousands of union members. The resulting labor agreement formed the Super Fresh Market chain which currently operates stores in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and the District of Columbia.

A visionary and innovator in employee benefits, his contributions include the first prepaid legal program, union negotiated drug and alcohol outpatient programs and pension benefit program for part-time workers. In addition to serving as president of UFCW Local 1776, Mr. Young also served with the Pennsylvania State Chapter of the AFL-CIO, and sat on the boards of Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and Northeast Catholic High School Alumni Association. Mr. Young also acted as the host of “Talking Unions,” a former program on WHAT 1340-AM talk radio in Philadelphia.

Sadly, on Wednesday January 2, 2012, Mr. Young passed away at the age of 74, leaving his wife Katherine, their six sons and a celebrated career as a reformer and proponent of labor relations in the Commonwealth. His legacy as a champion of the UFCW Local 1776, as well as his groundbreaking work as educator and benefactor of food and commercial workers will always be remembered.

Please join me in honoring the life and legacy of the man who became an inspiration not only to labor leaders here in the state, but worldwide.
