Subject: | State Trolley of Pennsylvania (Former HB-591) |
In the near future, I will be reintroducing HB-591 of the 2011-2012 legislative session designating the Johnstown Traction Company Car #355 as the official Trolley Car of Pennsylvania. At its peak in 1920’s, trolley transportation was the fifth largest industry in America. Johnstown Traction Company Car #355 is significant for many reasons. First of which, it was built in 1925 during the peak of trolley operation. Second, it was one of only a handful of older cars still available for service on the last day of operation in Johnstown, June 11, 1960. Johnstown was the last mid-size American city to offer trolley service. Lastly, Car #355 has undergone a complete restoration totaling over $300,000; few cars have been rebuilt to the extent of Car #355. Pennsylvania once had 116 different trolley lines and over 4,600 miles of trolley track. Car #355 represents the apex, decline and rebirth of trolley cars in Pennsylvania. Car #355 is owned and operated by the Rockhill Trolley Museum in Rockhill Furnace, Huntingdon County. For more information, you may log onto www.rockhilltrolley.org.
