Subject: | Pre-employment Drug Screening (HB 408 of 2011) |
In the near future I will be re-introducing legislation (HB 408 of 2011) amending the Public School Code to require pre-employment drug screening for all prospective employees of public and private schools, intermediate units and area vo-tech schools, including independent contractors and their employees. An incident in Allegheny County brought to my attention that we do not currently require pre-employment drug testing for our public and private school applicants. I was struck by the fact that we have strict screening requirements for the hiring of state employees in some jobs, turnpike workers and other public personnel yet we are negligent with the individuals to whom we entrust our school children. Our children are our most valuable assets and relying on us for protection; it is time we take the next necessary step and move forward in protecting our school children by requiring prospective employees be included in this pre-employment screening requirement. |
