MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 12, 2012 02:50 PM
From: Representative Anthony M. DeLuca
To: All House members
Subject: Resign to Run

In the near future, I will reintroduce legislation requiring elected officials to resign their current position prior to running for another elected office (former House Bill 2340).

In recent years, there has been significant news coverage regarding the number special elections for seats in the General Assembly. These special elections come at an additional cost and at a time in which the Commonwealth can ill afford the expense. I do not criticize our former colleagues for leaving the General Assembly prior to the end of their terms because the current system allows it. However, I do believe it is time for the system to change.

The proposed legislation requires any federal, state, county or municipal official to resign prior to running for an elected office that begins before the end of their current term. Elected officials would still be permitted to run in an election for another office provided their current term expires in the same year as the election. The bill would also prevent individuals from running for more than one office in the same election year.

Introduced as HB362
