A RESOLUTION

 

1Recognizing April 7 through 14, 2013, as "2013 Days of
2Remembrance" and April 8, 2013, as "Holocaust Remembrance
3Day" in Pennsylvania in commemoration of the millions of
4innocent victims of Nazi atrocities.

5WHEREAS, The Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic
6persecution and annihilation of the European Jewry by Nazi
7Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945, during
8which time six million Jews were murdered; and

9WHEREAS, Roma (Gypsies), people with disabilities and Poles
10were also targeted for destruction or decimation for racial,
11ethnic or national reasons, and millions more, including
12homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war and
13political dissidents, also suffered grievous oppression and
14death under Nazi tyranny; and

15WHEREAS, The history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity

1to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals,
2societies and governments; and

3WHEREAS, The people of Pennsylvania should always remember
4the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against
5hatred, persecution and tyranny; and

6WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth should actively
7rededicate themselves to the principles of individual freedom in
8a just society; and

9WHEREAS, The Days of Remembrance have been set aside for the
10people of this Commonwealth to remember the victims of the
11Holocaust as well as to reflect on the need for respect of all
12peoples; and

13WHEREAS, Pursuant to Public Law 96-388, the United States
14Holocaust Memorial Council designates the Days of Remembrance of
15the victims of the Holocaust to be Sunday, April 7 through
16Sunday, April 14, 2013, including the Day of Remembrance known
17as Yom Hashoah, April 8, 2013; therefore be it

18RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize April 7
19through 14, 2013, as "2013 Days of Remembrance" and April 8,
202013, as "Holocaust Remembrance Day" in Pennsylvania in
21commemoration of the millions of innocent victims of Nazi
22atrocities.
