SHUPNIK, Fred J., a Representative from Luzerne County; born, November 18, 1916, in Swoyersville, Luzerne County, Pa.; graduated, Luzerne High School; B.A., Scranton University, 1940; M.A., New York University, 1950; attended, Wilkes College (now Wilkes University); attended, East Stroudsburg State Teachers College (now East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania); ensign, United States Navy (1943-1946, World War II); teacher; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1959 term and served 11 consecutive terms thereafter; elected, Minority Caucus Administrator (1981-1982); appointed, chair, Joint State Government Commission (1969-1980); appointed, board, Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) (1981-1982); not a candidate for reelection to the House (1982); died, July 15, 1997 in Luzerne, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania; interred, Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton, Luzerene County, Pennsylvania.
