A RESOLUTION
1 Designating February 19, 2002, as "Phi Kappa Psi Day" in
2 Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, The Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity was founded in
4 Canonsburg, Washington County, Pennsylvania, on February 19,
5 1852; and
6 WHEREAS, The fraternity's founders, William Henry Letterman
7 and Charles Page Thomas Moore, were students at Jefferson
8 College, which is now known as Washington & Jefferson College,
9 in Washington, Pennsylvania; and
10 WHEREAS, The Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity has had more chapters
11 in this Commonwealth in its 150-year history than in any other
12 state; and
13 WHEREAS, Phi Kappa Psi alumni include Woodrow Wilson, the
14 28th President of the United States; Peyton Rous, Nobel Laureate
15 in Medicine; A. Mitchell Palmer, former Attorney General of the
1 United States; Brigadier General Billy Mitchell, "Father of the
2 Air Force"; General William Donovan, founder of the Central
3 Intelligence Agency; and the Honorable Raymond P. Shafer, former
4 Governor of Pennsylvania; and
5 WHEREAS, Since its founding in 1852, the Phi Kappa Psi
6 Fraternity has established 139 chapters, 86 of which are now
7 active; and
8 WHEREAS, On February 19, 2002, the fraternity's 140th
9 chapter, the Pennsylvania Tau Chapter at Penn State Altoona,
10 will be chartered during ceremonies marking the fraternity's
11 sesquicentennial; and
12 WHEREAS, The fraternity's Sesquicentennial Grand Arch Council
13 is being held August 7 through 10, 2002, at the Pittsburgh
14 Hilton Hotel; therefore be it
15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
16 February 19, 2002, as "Phi Kappa Psi Day" in Pennsylvania on the
17 occasion of the fraternity's sesquicentennial and recognize the
18 fraternity's chapters at Washington & Jefferson College,
19 Allegheny College, Bucknell University, Gettysburg College,
20 Dickinson College, Franklin and Marshall College, Lafayette
21 College, the University of Pennsylvania, The Pennsylvania State
22 University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Edinboro State
23 University, York College, the University of the Sciences in
24 Philadelphia and Drexel University; and be it further
25 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives salute the
26 founding chapter, Pennsylvania Alpha at Washington & Jefferson
27 College, on its 150th anniversary and congratulate the newest
28 chapter, Pennsylvania Tau at Penn State Altoona, on receiving
29 its charter on a noteworthy date in the fraternity's history.
