A RESOLUTION
Designating June 2, 2018, as "Gun Violence Awareness Day" in
Pennsylvania in recognition of this public safety and public
health issue and in commemoration of the lives lost to gun
violence in this Commonwealth.
WHEREAS, Gun violence is a national, state and local problem
affecting Americans in cities, suburbs and rural communities;
and
WHEREAS, An average of 96 Americans are killed with firearms
every day, and seven of those killed each day are children; and
WHEREAS, The number of firearm-related deaths per year in
this Commonwealth exceeds the number of motor vehicle-related
deaths per year in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
reports that this Commonwealth experienced the fourth-highest
firearm-related death rate in the country during the first
decade of the 21st century; and
WHEREAS, In this Commonwealth, an individual is killed with a
firearm every six hours; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, 1,485 Pennsylvanians died from firearm-

related homicides, suicides and accidental discharges; and
WHEREAS, More than 60% of Americans killed by a firearm are a
result of suicide; and
WHEREAS, Suicide attempts by firearms end fatally 91% of the
time, higher than all other methods of suicide; and
WHEREAS, The Center for American Progress found that women
who are victims of domestic violence are at a greater risk of
serious injury when firearms are readily accessible to their
abusers; and
WHEREAS, This year, "National Gun Violence Awareness Day" is
being observed June 2, 2018; and
WHEREAS, "Gun Violence Awareness Day" is a nationwide and
Statewide occasion to recognize the impact of gun violence;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate June 2, 2018, as "Gun
Violence Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania in recognition of this
public safety and public health issue and in commemoration of
the lives lost to gun violence in this Commonwealth.
