A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and honoring the members of the Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Incorporated, for more than a century of commitment
to social activism, academic excellence and civic engagement
in this Commonwealth on the occasion of Delta Day at the
State Capitol.
WHEREAS, The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated,
founded in 1913 by 22 diligent collegiate women on the campus of
Howard University, has blossomed into the largest African-
American women's organization in the United States; and
WHEREAS, For more than a century, the sorority has continued
to be guided by its founding principles of academic excellence,
economic and community development and social and political
action as well as educational and professional advancement
through service, leadership and empowerment; and
WHEREAS, Over the past 104 years, members of Delta Sigma
Theta have led countless initiatives addressing crucial
Statewide issues, including voter registration and education,
equal educational opportunities for all children, financial
literacy and economic empowerment, academic and financial

support for historically black colleges and universities and
access to quality and affordable health care; and
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta boasts 21 Statewide chapters
within this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Social Action Network, an umbrella
organization linking the sorority's 25 Social Action Committees
in this Commonwealth, continues to ensure that members are
tangibly executing their commitment to build working
relationships with elected officials and advancing critical
legislation; and
WHEREAS, The members' 2017 legislative priorities of
equitable education funding and equality in social justice
exhibit the organization's return to the basics of its advocacy;
and
WHEREAS, The women of Delta Sigma Theta continue to be
magnificent examples of servant leaders with an uncompromising
commitment to their community, which serves as the driving force
to carry on the mission of Delta Day at the State Capitol;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize and honor the members of
the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for more than a
century of commitment to social activism, academic excellence
and civic engagement in this Commonwealth on the occasion of
Delta Day at the State Capitol.
