A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of April 2017 as "Jazz Appreciation Month"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "Jazz Appreciation Month," known as JAM, was created
in 2002 at the Smithsonian Museum to herald and celebrate the
extraordinary heritage and history of jazz in the month of
April; and
WHEREAS, JAM is intended to stimulate and encourage people of
all ages to participate in jazz through study, concerts,
recordings and books; and
WHEREAS, This year, being the centennial of jazz icon Ella
Fitzgerald's birth, JAM is celebrating women in jazz; and
WHEREAS, Beyond traditional female vocalists, there are many
great composers, arrangers, orchestrators and instrumentalists
who have left and continue to leave an indelible print on the
history and future of jazz; and
WHEREAS, Ella Fitzgerald was one of the greatest American
singers in any genre of music; and

WHEREAS, Ella Fitzgerald had a warm and lovely voice, superb
rhythmic sense, considerable versatility, great range,
meticulous intonation and improvisatory gifts as a fine natural
melodist; and
WHEREAS, With an unparalleled ability for mimicry and "scat"
singing, Ella Fitzgerald also produced melodic lines that put
her in the category of great instrumental improvisers; and
WHEREAS, Known as a singer's singer, Ella Fitzgerald recorded
two thousand songs in her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, This year, JAM promotes appreciation of the joy,
power and glory of women in jazz; and
WHEREAS, The contributions of women in jazz have been and
continue to be a vital part of the United States' culture; and
WHEREAS, The works of women in jazz have been a gift to the
United States and to the world; and
WHEREAS, Jazz is a part of the rich and diverse musical
background of this Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of April 2017
as "Jazz Appreciation Month" in Pennsylvania and recognize the
accomplishments of this year's featured jazz artist Ella
Fitzgerald.
