A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of June 2018 as "Alzheimer's and Brain
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, June is "Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month," and
the Alzheimer's Association seeks support to raise awareness of
this debilitating disease and the need to increase efforts to
combat its human and economic costs; and
WHEREAS, The summer solstice, June 21, 2018, has been
declared the longest day, with teams around the world coming
together to honor the strength, passion and endurance of
individuals facing Alzheimer's disease with a day of activity
and advocacy; and
WHEREAS, Every individual in our communities is at risk for
developing Alzheimer's, a fatal disease that cannot be
prevented, treated or even slowed; and

WHEREAS, Worldwide, there are approximately 47 million people
living with Alzheimer's and other dementias, including more than
5 million living in the United States and more than 400,000
living in Pennsylvania, and, without a change, these worldwide
numbers are expected to grow to 76 million by 2030; and
WHEREAS, An estimated 5.5 million people who are 65 years of
age or older and approximately 200,000 people who are under 65
years of age live with Alzheimer's; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in
the United States, and one in three seniors dies with
Alzheimer's or another dementia; and
WHEREAS, Only 45% of individuals with Alzheimer's disease or
their caregivers report being told of their diagnosis, while
more than 90% of individuals with the four most common types of
cancer have been told of their diagnosis; and
WHEREAS, During 2017 in the United States, 16.1 million
family members and friends provided 18.4 billion hours of unpaid
care to individuals with Alzheimer's and other dementias and
that care had an estimated economic value of $232.1 billion; and
WHEREAS, In 2017, Pennsylvania had an estimated 675,000
Alzheimer's and dementia family caregivers providing 769 million
hours of unpaid care valued at more than $9.7 billion; and
WHEREAS, Researchers in Pennsylvania and around the world
continue their efforts to develop scientific breakthroughs that
could one day bring about a world without Alzheimer's disease;
and
WHEREAS, The individuals, families, friends and caregivers
dealing with Alzheimer's disease and the researchers who are
seeking a cause or cure should be recognized; and
WHEREAS, The efforts of the Alzheimer's Association to raise

funds and promote awareness to fight Alzheimer's disease and
other dementias improve the quality of human life for
individuals living with Alzheimer's disease and their
caregivers; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of June 2018 as "Alzheimer's Disease and Brain Awareness
Month" in Pennsylvania.
