A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and achievements of Dan Rooney and expressing
condolences on his passing.
WHEREAS, Dan Rooney died April 13, 2017, in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, at 84 years of age; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Milton Rooney was born July 20, 1932, in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the oldest son of Pittsburgh Steelers
founder Art Rooney; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Rooney attended North Catholic High School,
where he excelled in football; and
WHEREAS, In 1952, Mr. Rooney, married Patricia Reagan, and
together they had nine children; and
WHEREAS, In 1955, Mr. Rooney, earned his degree in accounting
from Duquesne University and, upon graduation, went to work for
the Pittsburgh Steelers; and
WHEREAS, In 1960, Mr. Rooney was named director of personnel

by the Pittsburgh Steelers and, by 1969, was managing day-to-day
operations of the franchise; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Rooney played a key role in the hiring of Head
Coach Chuck Noll and drafting Hall of Fame players, including
quarterback Terry Bradshaw and defensive tackle Joe Greene; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Rooney assumed a leadership role in the National
Football League (NFL) when he was appointed chairman of the
NFL's expansion committee, guiding the addition of the Seattle
Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; and
WHEREAS, In 1975, Mr. Rooney was named President of the
Pittsburgh Steelers, coinciding with the franchise's first Super
Bowl victory; and
WHEREAS, Under Mr. Rooney's guidance, the Pittsburgh Steelers
reached unparalleled levels of success, winning three more Super
Bowls in the 1970s; and
WHEREAS, In 1988, Mr. Rooney became the lead owner of the
Pittsburgh Steelers after the death of his father; and
WHEREAS, In 2000, Mr. Rooney was inducted into the Pro
Football Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, In 2002, after Mr. Rooney was named chairman of the
NFL's diversity committee, the NFL adopted the "Rooney Rule"
requiring teams to interview at least one minority candidate
when hiring a head coach or general manager; and
WHEREAS, In 2009, Mr. Rooney became the United States
ambassador to Ireland, a position in which he served until 2012;
and
WHEREAS, In 2013, Mr. Rooney, was inducted into the Irish
American Hall of Fame and named a Presidential Distinguished
Service Award recipient; and
WHEREAS, Under Mr. Rooney's guidance, the Pittsburgh Steelers

became the most successful franchise in the modern NFL, winning
15 division championships, 8 AFC championships and 6 Super Bowl
championships; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Rooney contributed to numerous charitable works
with much fanfare, including the Ireland Funds; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Rooney was a beloved and admired icon not just
in western Pennsylvania, but throughout our Commonwealth;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life
and achievements of Dan Rooney and express condolences on his
passing; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend
condolences to his wife of 65 years, Patricia, their children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the family of Dan Rooney.
