A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of June 2017 as "Dairy Month" and "Dairy
Farmers Appreciation Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Agriculture is Pennsylvania's leading economic
driver and the dairy industry is the largest component of
Pennsylvania's agricultural economy; and
WHEREAS, Milk production alone contributes more than 35% of
all agricultural income and generates more than $5 billion in
revenue for Pennsylvania's economy; and
WHEREAS, More than 6,650 dairy farm families manage 525,000
cows that produce more than 10.9 billion pounds of the nation's
total supply of milk annually, ranking Pennsylvania fifth
nationally in milk production; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's dairy manufacturers continue to be
among the nation's top producers of butter (second), cheese
(seventh) and low-fat ice cream (fourth); and

WHEREAS, "Dairy Month" offers an opportunity to honor farm
families and the food processors who provide consumers with a
wide variety of fresh, wholesome dairy products that provide
essential nutrients to growing bodies and comprise a healthy
diet; and
WHEREAS, Milk was named the official beverage of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on April 29, 1982, by the General
Assembly; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is proud of its dairy industry and the
important contribution the dairy industry makes to our economy
and the welfare of our citizens; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania salutes dairy farmers and their
families for the strength and vitality they bring to rural
communities throughout this Commonwealth, their commitment to
using advanced technology for maximum efficiency and their
dedication to animal care, environmental stewardship and quality
dairy products; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of June 2017 as "Dairy Month" and "Dairy Farmers
Appreciation Month" in Pennsylvania and recognize the
outstanding contributions of Pennsylvania's dairy farmers to the
historical, cultural, environmental, economic and health success
of this Commonwealth.
