A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the American Red Cross' Sound the Alarm Campaign
from September 23 to October 15, 2017, in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, According to the American Red Cross, Sound the Alarm
is a national campaign that was established to provide
lifesaving assistance to residents in high-risk neighborhoods
through the installation of free smoke alarms; and
WHEREAS, It is estimated that American Red Cross volunteers
and partner organizations will install more than 100,000 free
smoke alarms in homes located throughout 100 communities across
the United States; and
WHEREAS, As part of its campaign, the American Red Cross will
provide assistance to communities by providing lifesaving
measures and information on preparedness in the hopes of
reducing the number of injuries and deaths attributed to home
fires; and
WHEREAS, According to the American Red Cross, 35,000

volunteers are needed to help ensure that the campaign reaches
its goal; and
WHEREAS, The organization's 2014 Home Fire Campaign is
credited with saving 260 lives to date through the installation
of nearly 942,000 smoke alarms free of charge in more than
11,000 towns and cities across the nation; and
WHEREAS, According to the American Red Cross, on average,
seven people die each day as a result of home fires, with the
majority of victims being children and the elderly; and
WHEREAS, Home fires cause more than $7 billion in property
damage each year; and
WHEREAS, According to the American Red Cross, the ways in
which individuals can get involved in their communities to save
lives and raise awareness to the dangers of home fires include
volunteering to install free smoke alarms, raising funds to help
the Sound the Alarm Campaign and making a donation to support
the Home Fire Campaign; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
American Red Cross' Sound the Alarm Campaign from September 23
to October 15, 2017, in Pennsylvania.
