Hanover Township was divided into East and South Hanover
Townships; and
WHEREAS, Unionford, a town containing a fort and six
outposts, was the principal settlement in South Hanover Township
from 1750-1791; and
WHEREAS, The community of Hoernerstown was established from
land owned by Major John Hoerner, who named it after his father,
Andrew Hoerner; and
WHEREAS, In 1845, the Village of Union Deposit was formed by
Philip Wolfsberger and Issac Hershey; and
WHEREAS, The community of Sand Beach was formed in the
eastern part of the township and included a sawmill, grist mill,
cabinet shop, store and schoolhouse; and
WHEREAS, Sand Beach is known for a 220-foot covered bridge
built in 1906 that crossed Swatara Creek between Derry Township
and South Hanover Township; and
WHEREAS, The bridge in Sand Beach, restored by Hershey
Enterprises in 1964, burned the night of September 3, 1966; and
WHEREAS, A canal along Swatara Creek was central to the
growth and early commercial success of South Hanover Township;
and
WHEREAS, Vast sections of South Hanover Township remain
primarily agricultural; and
WHEREAS, Structures of thriving and rich architectural
character are scattered throughout South Hanover Township; and
WHEREAS, South Hanover Township has grown and prospered since
it was established in 1842; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
175th anniversary of South Hanover Township, Dauphin County.
