A RESOLUTION
Designating July 20, 2017, as "Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day" in
Pennsylvania in honor of the amazing accomplishments of
Special Olympics' founder and the strong history of Special
Olympics in Pennsylvania and wishing the athletes, parents,
employees, coaches and the volunteers of Special Olympics
Pennsylvania good fortune in the days to come.
WHEREAS, Eunice Kennedy Shriver was the founder of the
Special Olympics, empowering athletes with intellectual
disabilities to develop self-confidence and become leaders, so
that they can have a say in how individuals are treated; and
WHEREAS, Eunice Kennedy Shriver created the first
international Special Olympics Games on July 20, 1968,
consisting of 1,000 athletes competing in three sports, track
and field, swimming and floor hockey; and
WHEREAS, Special Olympics Pennsylvania was founded in May
1970 when 135 athletes with intellectual disabilities competed
at a track and field event held at West Chester University; and

WHEREAS, Former Pennsylvania Governor Raymond Shafer marked
the week Special Olympics Pennsylvania was founded, May 24
through May 30, 1970, as "Special Olympics Week" in
Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, Special Olympics Pennsylvania now serves almost
20,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities who participate
in 21 Olympic-style sports at no cost to them, their families or
their caregivers; and
WHEREAS, Special Olympics' continuing efforts to change
society's perspective of people with disabilities by showcasing
their abilities is the inspirational legacy of Eunice Kennedy
Shriver; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate July
20, 2017, as "Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day" in Pennsylvania in
honor of the amazing accomplishments of Special Olympics'
founder and the strong history of Special Olympics in
Pennsylvania and wish the athletes, parents, employees, coaches
and the volunteers of Special Olympics Pennsylvania good fortune
in the days to come.
