A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the Pennsylvania American Legion Auxiliary Keystone
Girls State program being held during the week of June 18,
2017.
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania American Legion Keystone Girls
State program is an educational workshop for high school student
leaders, such as student government officers, athletic team
captains and prominent student organization officers; and
WHEREAS, The purpose of the program is to teach the young
people of today constructive attitudes toward the American form
of government; and
WHEREAS, High school students in their junior year are
selected for participation in this program based upon having
displayed leadership qualities and high moral character and
maintaining high scholastic standing; and
WHEREAS, Students selected to attend the program have the
opportunity to gain leadership skills through a variety of

activities and presentations during the one-week program at
Shippensburg University; and
WHEREAS, The program is a practical school of government
conducted on an education-by-participation basis, the hallmark
and focus of which is an experientially based government
exercise whereby participants take on roles and practice the
procedures and operations in the organization and operation of
mock cities; and
WHEREAS, The hands-on format requires the participants to
form and operate two fictitious political parties; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated group of volunteers teaches students
about the fundamentals of the legislative process, the branches
of government and parliamentary procedure; and
WHEREAS, The students learn lifelong lessons in leadership,
teamwork, advocacy, consensus building and respect; and
WHEREAS, Students leave the program enriched and use what
they learned throughout their lives for the betterment of our
country; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
Pennsylvania American Legion Auxiliary Keystone Girls State
program being held during the week of June 18, 2017; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
Pennsylvania American Legion Auxiliary for its contributions in
supporting and promoting the leadership skills of promising
young Pennsylvanians and enhancing their understanding of our
American form of government through practical teaching and
personal involvement.
