A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of July 24 through 30, 2017, as "ADA Week"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA),
the world's first comprehensive civil rights law for individuals
with disabilities, was signed into law on July 26, 1990; and
WHEREAS, Described as the Emancipation Proclamation for the
disability community, the ADA prohibits discrimination on the
basis of a disability; and
WHEREAS, A disability can occur at birth or through accident,
disease or aging; and
WHEREAS, More than 50 million people in the United States,
including more than 1.6 million people in this Commonwealth,
have some level of disability; and
WHEREAS, The ADA promotes accessibility, equality of
opportunity, full participation, independent living and economic

self-sufficiency for individuals with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, The ADA has opened public institutions; and
WHEREAS, The ADA has expanded the benefits and privileges of
education and employment; and
WHEREAS, Compliance with the ADA's nondiscrimination
principles and practices is improving the lives of individuals
with disabilities and their families in this Commonwealth and
beyond; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
week of July 24 through 30, 2017, as "ADA Week" in Pennsylvania.
