A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of April 2017 as "Community Service
Appreciation Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Community service and civic pride are core
principles of this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Each year, Pennsylvanians donate millions of dollars
and volunteer hours to foundations and nonprofit corporations in
order to better our communities and this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The Department of State has registered 12,208
charities in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, According to the Corporation for National and
Community Service, in 2015-2016 more than 15,000 Pennsylvanians
of all ages engaged in informal volunteering, including helping
a neighbor or assisting a senior citizen; and
WHEREAS, According to the Corporation for National and
Community Service, more than a quarter of Americans volunteered

last year, serving approximately 7.8 billion hours; and
WHEREAS, Based on current labor rates, that is an estimated
contribution of $184 billion dollars in service; and
WHEREAS, PennSERVE is an umbrella agency under the
Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry that helps promote
community service initiatives throughout this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The mission of PennSERVE is "to encourage, develop
and facilitate volunteer and citizen community service which
builds upon the talents, strengths, opportunities and challenges
of people and communities in ways which enhance the quality of
life for all citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania"; and
WHEREAS, These volunteers are meeting the needs of their
local communities; and
WHEREAS, Every volunteer in this Commonwealth deserves thanks
and recognition for their contributions; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of April 2017 as "Community Service Appreciation Month" in
Pennsylvania and congratulate all Pennsylvanians on their
participation in all forms of community service or volunteerism.
