A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of April 9 through 15, 2017, as "National
Library Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "National Library Week" is a national observance
sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries
across the country each April; and
WHEREAS, "National Library Week" celebrates the valuable
contributions of libraries, librarians and library staff and the
services and resources they provide to people of all ages
throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, All types of libraries across the country
participate, including school, public, academic and special
libraries; and
WHEREAS, Libraries do more than house resources: libraries
have long served as trusted and treasured institutions, and

librarians and library staff fuel efforts to better serve their
communities, campuses and schools; and
WHEREAS, With the cooperation of the American Library
Association and the Advertising Council, the first "National
Library Week" was observed in 1958 with the theme "Wake Up and
Read!"; and
WHEREAS, The 2017 theme, "Libraries Transform," highlights
how libraries and librarians are looking beyond their
traditional roles to provide more opportunities for community
engagement and delivering new services that connect closely with
patrons' needs; and
WHEREAS, Libraries and librarians are opening up a world of
possibilities through innovative STEAM programming, makerspaces,
job-seeking resources and the power of reading; and
WHEREAS, Libraries support democracy and effect social change
through their commitment to provide equitable access to
information for all library patrons regardless of race,
ethnicity, creed, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity
or socioeconomic status; and
WHEREAS, Libraries in Pennsylvania serve millions of visitors
and conduct programs for children, parents, entrepreneurs,
senior citizens and students; and
WHEREAS, "National Library Week" encourages all residents to
visit a local library to take advantage of the wonderful
resources and the world of knowledge and opportunity offered
there; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
week of April 9 through 15, 2017, as "National Library Week" in
Pennsylvania.
