A RESOLUTION
Recognizing March 14, 2017, as "Rare Disease Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Nearly 1 in 10 individuals living in this
Commonwealth has a rare disease, and, according to the National
Institutes of Health, nearly 30 million Americans have rare
diseases; and
WHEREAS, A disease is considered rare if it affects fewer
than 200,000 Americans; and
WHEREAS, There are nearly 7,000 rare diseases; and
WHEREAS, Rare diseases tend to be lifelong, and approximately
two-thirds of individuals affected are children; and
WHEREAS, "Rare Disease Day" is observed nationwide by
millions across the country and by the National Organization for
Rare Disorders to promote special awareness of rare diseases;
and
WHEREAS, Special events and activities are planned in

schools, hospitals, universities and medical schools, including
the sharing of stories by individuals affected by a rare
disease; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize March
14, 2017, as "Rare Disease Day" in Pennsylvania in order to show
residents of this Commonwealth living with a rare disease that,
while their diseases are rare, they are not alone.
