A RESOLUTION
Recognizing January 27, 2017, as "International Holocaust
Remembrance Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, During World War II, Germany's Nazi regime, led by
Adolf Hitler, invaded several European countries in order to
accomplish its goals of expanding its power and territory and
providing for racial purity; and
WHEREAS, Germany's Nazi regime executed millions of Jews as
part of its goal to provide for racial purity; and
WHEREAS, The murder of approximatley six million European
Jews and millions of others by Germany's Nazi regime during
World War II came to be known as the Holocaust; and
WHEREAS, On January 27, 1945, the largest concentration camp,
Auschwitz-Birkenau, was liberated by Soviet troops, resulting in
the freedom of many Jews who experienced the atrocities of the
Nazi regime; and

WHEREAS, Due to the importance and significance of this day
in history, the General Assembly of the United Nations
designated January 27 as "International Holocaust Remembrance
Day"; and
WHEREAS, This day is recognized each year to honor Holocaust
victims and educate people about the history of the Holocaust to
help prevent future acts of genocide; and
WHEREAS, The General Assembly of the United Nations also
encourages, as part of its original declaration in 2005, that
this day be used to condemn religious intolerance, incitement,
harassment or violence against individuals or communities based
on ethnic origin or religious belief; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize January
27, 2017, as "International Holocaust Remembrance Day" in
Pennsylvania.
