AN ACT
Amending the act of May 30, 2012 (P.L.574, No.59), entitled "An
act establishing standards for preventing sudden cardiac
arrest and death in student athletes; assigning duties to the
Department of Health and the Department of Education; and
imposing penalties," further providing for definitions and
for sudden cardiac arrest.
The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
hereby enacts as follows:
Section 1. Section 2 of the act of May 30, 2012 (P.L.574,
No.59), known as the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act, is
amended by adding a definition to read:
Section 2. Definitions.
The following words and phrases when used in this act shall
have the meanings given to them in this section unless the
context clearly indicates otherwise:

"Electrocardiogram." A medical test which results in a
graphic record of heart muscle activity showing the variations
in electric force which trigger the contraction of the heart in
order to diagnose heart disease.

Section 2. Section 3 of the act is amended by adding a
subsection to read:
Section 3. Sudden cardiac arrest.

(a.1) Electrocardiogram.--
(1) A student participating in or desiring to
participate in an athletic activity shall submit to an
electrocardiogram at least once while the student is in high
school and prior to initially participating in the athletic
activity.
(2) The results of the electrocardiogram under paragraph
(1) must be transmitted to the student's school entity prior
to the student's initial participation in the athletic
activity.

Section 3. This act shall take effect in 60 days.
