A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of November 8 through 14, 2015, as "Nurse
Practitioner Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, There are more than 205,000 licensed nurse
practitioners in the United States and approximately 9,500 nurse
practitioners in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The first nurse practitioner program was founded in
1965 and nurse practitioners have contributed greatly in
providing health care to patients during the last 50 years; and
WHEREAS, Nurse practitioners provide high-quality, cost-
effective, patient-centered, personalized health care; and
WHEREAS, Nurse practitioners have completed graduate and
advanced education, with most having a master's degree and an
increasing number having a doctorate; and
WHEREAS, Nurse practitioners order, perform and interpret
diagnostic tests, diagnose and treat acute and chronic
conditions and prescribe medications and other treatments; and

WHEREAS, Nurse practitioners are partners in the health care
of their patients and, in addition to clinical services, focus
on health promotion, disease prevention and health education and
counseling, to guide patients to make smarter health and
lifestyle choices; and
WHEREAS, The excellence, safety and cost effectiveness of the
care provided by nurse practitioners are well established and
documented; and
WHEREAS, The confidence that patients have in health care
delivered by nurse practitioners is evidenced by the more than
916 million visits made to nurse practitioners annually; and
WHEREAS, Nurse practitioners provide health care to
individuals of all ages and in diverse health care settings,
such as private office practices, hospitals, long-term care
facilities, schools, State and local health departments, managed
care facilities and retail-based clinics; and
WHEREAS, More than 18% of nurse practitioners practice in a
rural setting with populations of less than 25,000; and
WHEREAS, It is documented that patients of nurse
practitioners are given more personal time and attention than
they traditionally receive from other health care providers; and
WHEREAS, Nurse practitioners should be recognized for their
contributions as dedicated health care professionals serving
patients in this Commonwealth and throughout the country;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of November 8
through 14, 2015, as "Nurse Practitioner Week" in Pennsylvania.
