A RESOLUTION
Recognizing April 22, 2015, as "Earth Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, April 22, 2015, is the 45th anniversary of "Earth
Day"; and
WHEREAS, "Earth Day" pioneers United States Senator Gaylord
Nelson and Denis Hayes had grave concerns about the
environmental issues facing America and sought to unite millions
of Americans by developing educational events that drew in 20
million people on the first "Earth Day" held April 22, 1970; and
WHEREAS, The issue of preserving the environment and
participating in the stewardship of the nation and State has
been a vital concern within this Commonwealth as it is reflected
in the adoption of environmentally cognizant legislation which
includes the Clean Water Act, the National Wild and Scenic
Rivers Act, the Federal Pesticides Act, the Clean Air Act, the
Environmental Education Act and the National Hiking Trails and
National Scenic Trails Acts; and
WHEREAS, "Earth Day" will be observed on April 22, 2015, to

unite this Commonwealth with the nation and countries
internationally to undertake the responsibility of overseeing
and protecting the environment for the betterment, health and
well-being of current and future inhabitants, demonstrating an
appreciation for the sentiments of the first "Earth Day" of
1970; and
WHEREAS, "Earth Day" also aims to bring congeniality to the
nearly 200 countries that recognize the commemoration of
Senator Nelson's vision of creating an environment that is full
of decency, quality and mutual respect for all human beings and
other living creatures; and
WHEREAS, Section 27 of Article I of the Constitution of
Pennsylvania designates the Commonwealth trustee of
Pennsylvania's public natural resources on behalf of all
Pennsylvanians; and
WHEREAS, The abundance of natural resources such as lumber,
coal and natural gas make the concept of conserving and
protecting the environment a special concern for the
Commonwealth as we seek to conserve and sustain this
Commonwealth's natural resources for the satisfaction of present
and future generations; and
WHEREAS, "Earth Day" is not only directed toward the
cleanliness and appreciation of the physical environment but
also encourages harmony, peace and kindness in all interpersonal
interactions effectively caring for the social environment; and
WHEREAS, Stewardship of the environment also encompasses
caring for and respecting the individuals that exist within our
communities; and
WHEREAS, In observation of "Earth Day," cities and towns
throughout this Commonwealth will hold events to promote

environmentally friendly behaviors and to educate individuals of
their duties as responsible citizens; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize April 22, 2015, as "Earth
Day" in Pennsylvania and implore all residents of this
Commonwealth to observe "Earth Day" by assuming their
responsibility as stewards of the physical and social
environment.
