PRINTER'S NO. 1927
THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF PENNSYLVANIA
SENATE BILL
No.
1314
Session of
2015
INTRODUCED BY KILLION, JUNE 14, 2016
REFERRED TO STATE GOVERNMENT, JUNE 14, 2016
AN ACT
Designating quartz as the official State rock of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
hereby enacts as follows:
Section 1. Official State rock.
(a) Findings.--
(1) Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals in this
Commonwealth and can be found across Pennsylvania in many
forms and colors.
(2) Quartz can occur as beautiful, clear, six-sided
crystals called rock crystal. It can also occur as fine-
grained masses called chalcedony, which forms flint.
(3) Various colors of quartz exist and are known by
descriptive names such as smoky quartz and rose quartz.
(4) The earliest inhabitants of this Commonwealth used
quartz to fashion arrowheads and cutting tools. The
availability of quartz, as well the hardness of this mineral,
made quartz a suitable raw material.
