| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating the month of September 2012 as "Childhood Cancer |
2 | Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania, honoring those young people |
3 | who have lost their lives to childhood cancer, expressing |
4 | gratitude to the doctors and nurses who provide special care |
5 | to patients and families affected by childhood cancer, and |
6 | encouraging all citizens to join the fight against childhood |
7 | cancer in this Commonwealth. |
8 | WHEREAS, Childhood cancer is the number one disease killer of |
9 | children in the United States, killing more children between the |
10 | ages of one and twenty than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis |
11 | and AIDS combined, and is the second leading cause of death |
12 | during childhood, exceeded only by accidents; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that 12,060 |
14 | children under 15 years of age will be diagnosed with cancer |
15 | this year and roughly 1,340 will lose their battle against the |

1 | disease; and |
2 | WHEREAS, The potential years of life lost to childhood cancer |
3 | and the potential years of life saved by treatment exceed all |
4 | other cancers with the exception of breast cancer; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Most children cannot be treated at a local hospital, |
6 | and families must face the disruption of moving for treatment at |
7 | a regional cancer center; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Childhood cancer treatment has been called the |
9 | modern miracle because five-year relative survival has improved |
10 | markedly over the past 30 years to approximately 80%; and |
11 | WHEREAS, There is significant progress that still must be |
12 | made with regard to childhood cancer treatment, because there |
13 | are many types of childhood cancer, and some varieties with |
14 | lower survival rates are still very difficult to treat; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is a leader in the fight against and |
16 | treatment of childhood cancer with six Children's Oncology Group |
17 | hospitals, St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, The |
18 | Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Geisinger Medical Center, |
19 | Lehigh Valley Hospital - Muhlenburg, Hershey Medical Center and |
20 | Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh; and |
21 | WHEREAS, Two of only ten institutions in the Pediatric Brain |
22 | Tumor Consortium are in Pennsylvania, The Children's Hospital of |
23 | Philadelphia and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh; and Penn |
24 | State Hershey Children's Hospital is one of only 11 institutions |
25 | nationwide in the Pediatric Oncology Experimental Therapeutic |
26 | Consortium; therefore be it |
27 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the |
28 | month of September 2012 as "Childhood Cancer Awareness Month" in |
29 | Pennsylvania; and be it further |
30 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor those young |
