A RESOLUTION

1

Designating the month of September 2012 as "Childhood Cancer

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania, honoring those young people

3

who have lost their lives to childhood cancer, expressing

gratitude to the doctors and nurses who provide special care

to patients and families affected by childhood cancer, and

6

encouraging all citizens to join the fight against childhood

7

cancer in this Commonwealth.

8

WHEREAS, Childhood cancer is the number one disease killer of

9

children in the United States, killing more children between the

ages of one and twenty than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis

11

and AIDS combined, and is the second leading cause of death

12

during childhood, exceeded only by accidents; and

13

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that 12,060

14

children under 15 years of age will be diagnosed with cancer

15

this year and roughly 1,340 will lose their battle against the

disease; and

2

WHEREAS, The potential years of life lost to childhood cancer

10

markedly over the past 30 years to approximately 80%; and

11

WHEREAS, There is significant progress that still must be

27
