A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the month of February 2011 as "American Heart Month"

2

in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease is the nation's leading cause

4

of death and costliest disease with direct and indirect costs

5

estimated to be $228 billion; and

6

WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease accounts for one out of three

7

deaths nationwide; and

8

WHEREAS, Nearly 2,200 Americans die of cardiovascular disease

9

each day, an average of one death every 39 seconds; and

10

WHEREAS, Nearly one in three deaths due to cardiovascular

11

disease occur before 75 years of age; and

12

WHEREAS, An estimated 785,000 people in the United States

13

will have a new coronary attack, an estimated 470,000 people

14

nationwide will have a recurrent attack and an additional

195,000 "silent" heart attacks will occur this year; and

2

WHEREAS, More than 42,300 Pennsylvanians died from

3

cardiovascular disease in 2008; and

4

WHEREAS, Research clearly indicates that there are preventive

5

strategies, as well as community-based strategies, than can

6

increase survival rates from cardiovascular disease; and

7

WHEREAS, The American Heart Association's 2020 impact goal

8

seeks to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by

9

20% while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and

10

stroke by 20% through research, population-level and community-

11

level interventions, public health and policy measures; and

12

WHEREAS, The American Heart Association encourages citizens

13

to help save lives by calling 911 if cardiovascular disease

14

symptoms occur, become trained in CPR and to encourage

15

comprehensive automated external defibrillator (AED) programs in

16

their communities; and

17

WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is celebrating

18

February 2011 as "American Heart Month" and promoting education

19

and awareness by encouraging citizens to learn the warning signs

20

of heart attack and stroke; therefore be it

21

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

22

month of February 2011 as "American Heart Month" in Pennsylvania

23

to emphasize the importance of the ongoing fight against heart

24

disease and urge all citizens to acknowledge the critical

25

importance of tools and skills that will increase survival rates

26

from cardiac arrest.
