                                     AN ACT

     1  Providing for the observance of May 27 of each year as Hubert H.
     2     Humphrey, Jr. Day.

     3     WHEREAS, The people of Pennsylvania, and the people of the
     4  United States and the world were deeply grieved by the untimely
     5  death of Senator Hubert Horatio Humphrey, Jr.; and
     6     WHEREAS, Hubert H. Humphrey, Jr. carried Pennsylvania as the
     7  Democratic nominee for Vice President in 1964, as the Democratic
     8  nominee for President in 1968, and as a candidate for the
     9  Democratic nomination for President in 1972; and
    10     WHEREAS, Hubert H. Humphrey, Jr. was a national leader in
    11  providing for the civil rights of all persons, fair labor
    12  practices, Federal aid to education, the Peace Corps, medicare,
    13  arms control negotiations among the major powers of the world;
    14  and
    15     WHEREAS, Hubert H. Humphrey, Jr.'s 23 years in the United


     1  States Senate, four years as Vice President, and three years as
     2  Mayor of Minneapolis constituted one of the most significant
     3  political careers in American history; and
     4     WHEREAS, Many people in both political parties wish to see
     5  Hubert H. Humphrey, Jr. honored for both his substantive
     6  achievements and the honor, decency and integrity with which he
     7  carried them out, in the hope that he will continue to serve as
     8  an example for his fellow Americans.
     9     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    10  hereby enacts as follows:
    11     Section 1.  In honor of Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, Jr., who
    12  was born on May 27, 1911, May 27 of each year is hereby
    13  designated as "Hubert H. Humphrey Day" and is set aside to
    14  commemorate the birth of Hubert H. Humphrey, Jr. The Governor is
    15  authorized and requested to issue a proclamation each year
    16  calling upon the people of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to
    17  commemorate the life and the service to his country and its
    18  citizens of Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, Jr., and to observe that
    19  day with appropriate honors, ceremonies and prayers, with
    20  notification to surviving members of the Humphrey family and the
    21  members of the General Assembly.
    22     Section 2.  This act shall take effect immediately.
