William Wharton Mearkle born January 24, 1871, farm, Monroe Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania; son of Henry and Julian Karns Mearkle; early education, township schools; Dickinson Seminary (now Lycoming College); Dickinson School of Law (now Penn State Dickinson Law); lawyer; mortgage lender, United Security and Life Insurance Trust Company; realtor and loan correspondent, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, thirty years; elected, Republican, Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, 1915-1918; not a candidate for reelection, 1918; elected, Republican, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1919-1920; married, Louise C. Delp Mearkle, 1923, no children; chair, Seventh Ward Republicans, 1936; died July 2, 1954, Glenshaw, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; interment, Smithfield East End Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
