ALTER, George Elias, a Representative from Allegheny County; born in Springdale, Allegheny County, Pa., May 8, 1868; carpenter; stenographer and law clerk; lawyer (1893-1940); auditor, Springdale Township; elected, council Springdale (1905-1908); elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to serve the 1909, 1911 and 1913 terms; elected, Speaker (1913-1914); appointed, State Commission on Constitutional Amendment and Revision (1920); appointed, Pennsylvania Attorney General (1920-1923); unsuccessful campaign, Governor of Pennsylvania (1923); president, Pennsylvania Bar Association (1924-1925); appointed, Commission on Uniform State Laws (1927-1932); died, August 18, 1940 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; interred, Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
