MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 18, 2018 12:48 PM
From: Senator Mario M. Scavello
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution honoring East Stroudsburg University upon its 125 Anniversary

In the very near future, I plan on introducing a resolution in recognition of the 125th Anniversary of East Stroudsburg University.

East Stroudsburg University is one of the fourteen Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) institutions, offering fifty-five undergraduate programs, twenty-two master’s programs and one doctoral program.

East Stroudsburg opened its doors as the East Stroudsburg Normal School on September 4, 1893, to three hundred twenty students wishing to pursue its two-year programs in elementary and science education. East Stroudsburg Normal School was initially privately owned and transferred to the Commonwealth in 1920, when it was renamed the “East Stroudsburg State Normal School.” Seven years later, the school was granted the ability to confer degrees of Bachelor of Science in education and Bachelor of Science in health education, and its name was changed to the State Teachers College at East Stroudsburg.

In 1960, the school’s name was changed to East Stroudsburg State College to reflect the addition of liberal arts and science curricula. Following the creation of PASSHE in 1982, the college officially became East Stroudsburg University on July 1, 1983. East Stroudsburg University first received accreditation from the Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools in 1950, and it was reaffirmed in 1992 and 2012.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution recognizing the 125th Anniversary of East Stroudsburg University and in offering best wishes for the universities continued growth and success.

If you have any questions regarding this resolution, please contact Christine Zubeck in my office at 717-787-6123 or czubeck@pasen.gov. Thank you for your consideration.
