MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 30, 2018 04:05 PM
From: Senator Sharif Street
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution Recognizing June 15th as “Eid Al-Fitr Day” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing June 15th as “Eid Al-Fitr Day” in Pennsylvania. I invite you to join me as a co-sponsor.

Eid Al- Fitr means “festival of breaking the fast,” and marks the end of Ramadan, which is the month of fasting and prayer. As well as celebrating the completion of fasting with great feasts, many Muslims attend prayers, listen to a khutba (sermon), exchange presents with their friends and neighbors, and give charity in the form of food.

Muslims recognize two major religious observations each year, Ramadan and Hajj. Each observance relates to a corresponding holiday Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha. Eid is typically celebrated for three days, and although it is not an official holiday in the United States, many Muslims request time off from work to celebrate.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is estimated to be the home to hundreds of thousands of Muslims. In the tradition of religious tolerance promoted by William Penn and instilled in the constitution of Pennsylvania, I urge you to join me in recognition of the Eid Al-Fitr holiday.
