Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 26, 2018 09:12 AM
From: Senator Scott Martin
To: All Senate members
Subject: Recognizing 2018 as the Bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass in Pennsylvania.

Soon I will be introducing a resolution as part of a nationwide effort to recognize 2018 as the Bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass.

Born in 1818 in Maryland, Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey would later change his name to Frederick Douglass when he escaped slavery and settled in the North. Douglass would go on to a lifetime of accomplishments despite the countless obstacles that faced him in a world and time that did not recognize African Americans as equal citizens. His reputation as a great orator and writer, along with his barrier-breaking achievements, secure Frederick Douglass as one of the most important figures to the African American community and its path to equality in America.

On November 2, 2017, the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Commission Act was signed into federal law, and across the United States, groups are working to carry out programs celebrating Frederick Douglass. This resolution is being offered on behalf of a coalition of organizations from across the Commonwealth: the Frederick Douglass Foundation of Pittsburgh, the Frederick Douglass Christian Academy of Philadelphia, the Frederick Douglass Institute of West Chester, and the Douglass Leadership Institute of Harrisburg.

I hope you will consider joining me in honoring the life and legacy of a great man and recognize 2018 as the Bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass in Pennsylvania.
