Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 24, 2018 09:10 AM
From: Senator Mario M. Scavello and Sen. Lawrence M. Farnese, Jr.
To: All Senate members
Subject: Senate Resolution: Designating March 2018 as “Problem Gambling Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania and Recognizing “National Problem Gambling Awareness Month”

In the near future, we plan on introducing a unanimous consent resolution that designates “Problem Gambling Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania and recognizes the “National Problem Gambling Awareness Month” in March 2018.

The purpose of this resolution is to help ensure that the citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are informed about the issue of problem gambling and the programs available to help individuals and their families who have been adversely affected by this serious public health issue. While legalized gambling was designed to allow individuals to enjoy its recreational aspects and to foster economic development in this Commonwealth, Pennsylvanians should also be aware that a small percentage (2% to 3% according to the National Council on Problem Gambling) of the United States population will have a gambling problem in any given year. Awareness of this public health issue will help ensure that problem gambling is adequately identified and addressed.

The resolution urges the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to continue its outreach efforts and to work with the gaming industry as a whole to develop and implement problem gambling programs at licensed facilities and further promote community-based programs in the Commonwealth.

If you have any questions about this resolution, please contact Jason R. Brehouse, Esq. at (717) 787-6123 or jbrehouse@pasen.gov.
