Subject: Credit for Military Experience for Civilian Licensure or Certification
 
In an effort to enhance employment opportunities for our veterans, I will introduce legislation requiring any state agency which regulates professions or occupations to evaluate and provide appropriate credit for military experience towards licensure or certification.

Many veterans leave active service with a great deal of training and education in various fields. However, they often find it challenging to find post-military employment that allows them to obtain credit for that experience and training for use in obtaining related civilian employment. Specifically, this bill will include:
  • Evaluation of the extent to which military training meets state requirements;
  • Identification of reciprocity mechanisms with other states;
  • Determination of whether an occupational exam is available to authorize a veteran to practice an occupation;
  • Documentation of the results and publication of a summary of pathways available to veterans to obtain authorization to practice an occupation;
  • Consultation with community colleges and other post-secondary educational institutions with relation to bridge programs to cover educational gaps and refresher courses for lapsed credentials; and
  • Consideration of the adoption of a national credentialing exam.
