MEMORANDUM

Subject: Handicap Placards in Legislative Offices

In the near future I will be introducing legislation that will allow constituents to obtain handicap parking placards in their respective legislative district offices rather than waiting to receive them in the mail. Currently, the process is that a legislative office will mail the constituent’s application and doctor note to PennDOT who will then mail the handicap placard directly to the constituent or the constituent will use the online application which can take up to 6 or even 8 weeks.

Often times, a constituent will have their notarized doctor note and application ready to submit, however it can be several weeks before they even receive an actual handicap placard for their vehicle. If an individual has a handicap or impediment, this waiting period can be very difficult and even detrimental for them.

This legislation will streamline the process, save money, and allow constituents to walk out of their legislative offices with their handicap placard on the same day they submit their application. Further, the same notarized application with a doctor’s signature would remain in place, the constituent would just be able to receive them at our district offices rather than waiting for them to come by mail. By enabling legislative offices to do this, it will ease the burden on so many of our constituents who will no longer have to wait to receive their placard.

Please join me in cosponsoring this legislation.
